Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Trim the asparagus ends.
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
Add the asparagus to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook for about 5-7 minutes until the asparagus is slightly tender.
Add the minced garlic during the last 1-2 minutes of cooking to prevent burning.
Sprinkle the shredded gruyere cheese evenly over the asparagus in the oven-safe skillet.
Cover the skillet with foil if needed to prevent the cheese from over-browning.
Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
While the asparagus is baking, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a small skillet over medium heat.
Add the panko breadcrumbs and toast, stirring frequently, until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.
Remove the skillet from the oven and sprinkle the toasted panko over the top. Serve immediately.
