Italian Sausage and Peppers in White Wine Sauce Ingredients

This dish uses easy-to-find ingredients, most of which you probably already have. Here's what you'll need:

  • Sweet Italian Sausage: We like to cut them into large chunks for more seared surface area. Spicy works too!
  • Red, Yellow, and Green Bell Peppers: A colorful mix adds both sweetness and visual appeal. Keep the pieces large so they hold up during cooking.
  • White Wine: We use a dry wine like Pinot Grigio.
  • Chicken Broth: Adds depth and helps balance the acidity of the wine. Don't skip the reduction step. Letting the liquid simmer down concentrates the flavor.
  • Onion: We prefer sweet or yellow onions for mellow flavor.
  • Garlic: A few cloves go a long way.
  • Italian Seasoning: A pantry staple that ties it all together.
  • Olive Oil, Salt, and Pepper: Basic, but essential.

A full ingredient list with exact measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Italian Sausages: Use turkey sausage or chicken sausage for a leaner option.
  • White Wine: Substitute with chicken broth if you prefer not to use alcohol.
  • Bell Peppers: Use any variety of sweet peppers or even add some spicy peppers for a kick.

Notes

Cooking Notes
Browning the sausage before simmering helps develop more flavor throughout the skillet sauce. Allowing the wine to reduce slightly prevents the sauce from tasting too sharp.
Tips for Best Results:
  • Sear the sausage until deeply golden before removing it.
  • Let the peppers develop light char for better flavor.
  • Simmer the wine briefly before returning the sausage.
  • Cover the skillet while finishing the sausage to keep it tender.
How to Know It’s Ready:
The sausage should reach 165°F internally while the peppers become tender with lightly browned edges.
