How To Make Easy Cheese Twists Recipe with Puff Pastry

Puff pastry dough on parchment covered sheet pan unfolded.

STEP ONE: Prepare the Pastry

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place one puff pastry sheet on the parchment, still cold but pliable.

Cheeses and seasoning pressed into the dough.

STEP TWO: Press in the Cheese and Seasoning

Sprinkle the pastry evenly with pre-shredded cheddar, Parmesan, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.

Place a second piece of parchment on top and press gently with clean hands or a rolling pin so toppings adhere.

Pastry strips being twisted with cheese in the middle.

STEP THREE: Trim, Cut, and Twist in Place

Trim edges for clean lines. Cut across the short side into 7 strips about ยพ-inch wide. Twist each strip in place on the parchment by anchoring one end with your fingertips and turning the other end until you see a neat spiral.

As you twist, some cheddar will fall off. Scoop the extra cheese to the side for topping later.

Cheese twists removed from the oven and still on sheet pan.

STEP FOUR: Brush and Bake

Brush the twisted straws with egg wash, then sprinkle the reserved fallen cheddar over the tops.

Bake at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC) for 15-18 minutes until puffed and deep golden. Optional finish: gently brush off any crispy cheese edges for a clean look and cool on a wire rack.

Recipe FAQs

How do I keep puff pastry twists crispy?

Bake cheese twists until they are deeply golden brown, then cool them on a wire rack for airflow. For extra crispness, reheat the puff pastry cheese straws in a hot oven for a few minutes before serving.

Can I make cheese twists ahead of time?

Yes, puff pastry cheese straws can be assembled a few hours ahead and kept in the fridge. Twist the strips, place them on a baking sheet, and refrigerate until ready to brush with egg wash and bake. This method keeps the pastry cold so the cheese straws puff up properly.

Why do some cheese twists unravel while baking?

Cheese twists unravel when the puff pastry is too warm or the spirals aren't set tightly. For best results, twist the strips in place on parchment paper, keep the dough chilled, and press the ends gently into the sheet to hold the spiral.

Can I use a different herb blend in cheese twists?

Yes, cheese twists are flexible, and any dried herb blend can be used. Italian seasoning, garlic-herb blends, or even pizza seasoning all work well with puff pastry and melted cheese.

What dips go best with puff pastry cheese straws?

Puff pastry cheese straws pair perfectly with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or a garlic-herb yogurt dip. These light dips complement the cheddar-Parmesan filling without overpowering the delicate layers of puff pastry.
