How to Make this Chipotle Seasoning Recipe

With these simple steps below, you can create a homemade chipotle seasoning that will transform your chicken.

Chipotle spices measured in a white bowl.

STEP 1: Measure Ingredients

Start by gathering all the required ingredients and measuring them accurately.

STEP 2: Mix and Store

Blend the spices thoroughly, ensuring they are well combined. You can mix them in the bowl or use a large container with enough room to shake and distribute the flavors evenly.

Transfer the chipotle seasoning into a sealed, air-tight container, preserving its freshness and potency for future use.

A piece of raw chicken pound flat with cleaver

STEP 3: Flatten and Season

If you're using the seasoning for chicken, preheat your oven to 375 degrees F.

Place chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap to flatten, then sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of the chipotle seasoning onto each piece. You could also try boneless skinless thighs.

A piece of cooked chicken with meat thermometer

STEP 4: Sear and Serve

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, and sear the seasoned chicken for 2-3 minutes on each side until a golden crust forms.

Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and continue cooking for about 8-10 minutes, or until the chicken reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Finally, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Paprika: Smoked paprika can be substituted for regular paprika.
  • Onion powder: If you don't have onion powder, you can use dried minced onions as a substitute. Use about one tablespoon of fresh onions or one teaspoon of dried minced onions as a replacement for one teaspoon of onion powder.
  • Dried oregano: In place of dried oregano, you can use dried thyme or dried basil for a different flavor.

How Can I Customize this Recipe?

  • Spice: For less heat, reduce the amount of chipotle pepper powder in the seasoning. You could try chili powder for a milder flavor profile. For a spicier kick, increase the quantity. Remember, it's all about finding the perfect balance of heat for your taste buds.
  • Flavor: Add a touch of sweetness by incorporating honey into the chipotle seasoning mixture, or give your chicken a bright and tangy twist by adding citrus juice.
  • Method: Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and marinate it in a mixture of chipotle seasoning, olive oil, and lime juice. Place on a skewer and grill until cooked through.

Expert Tips for Success

Make all of your favorite seasoning blends in one day. Store them in labeled containers to use throughout the year.

Let the prepared chicken rest before serving. This will help the juices redistribute, resulting in a juicier and more tender chicken.

Marinate chicken in the chipotle seasoning mixture. The marinating time should be for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight. This easy marinade will allow the flavors to penetrate the meat and enhance its taste.
