Air fryer chicken tenders without breading, often referred to as "naked chicken tenders," are a healthier alternative to traditional breaded versions. By skipping the breading, you reduce carbs and calories while still achieving a flavorful and crispy exterior through seasoning and air frying.

This method is popular among those following gluten-free, low-carb, or keto diets.

Air Fryer Chicken Tender (No Breading) Ingredients

These simple ingredients are pantry-friendly and full of flavor. We keep things easy and clean. No breading and no mess!

A labeled image of everything needed to make air fryer chicken tenders with no breading.
  • Chicken Tenders: We like using boneless, skinless chicken tenders because they're naturally portioned and cook evenly. You can also slice chicken breasts into strips if needed.
  • Smoked Paprika: This adds a deep, smoky color and flavor that mimics grilled chicken straight from the BBQ.
  • Garlic Powder: We use garlic powder for even seasoning and rich, savory flavor in every bite.
  • Onion Powder: It adds a subtle sweetness and depth that balances the smoky spices.
  • Brown Sugar: Just enough to caramelize and form a crisp, flavorful crust without making the chicken sweet.
  • Chili Powder: We use this for mild heat and earthy warmth.
  • Ground Cumin: Adds a toasty, nutty flavor that makes the dry rub richer.
  • Olive Oil: We use just a tablespoon to help the spices stick and the chicken crisp up. It also adds richness without overpowering the seasoning.
  • Chipotle Sauce: Smoky heat and bold flavor.

A full ingredient list with exact measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Chicken Tenders: Substitute with boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into strips.
  • Greek Yogurt: Swap with sour cream or dairy-free yogurt for a lactose-free option.
  • Adobo Sauce: Use chipotle powder or hot sauce if adobo sauce isn't available.

Recipe FAQs

What’s the secret to juicy chicken tenders in the air fryer?

The key is to lightly coat the chicken in oil and season generously, then avoid overcooking. Letting the tenders rest before air frying helps the dry rub adhere and form a crust. Always check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F without going higher.

Can you make air fryer chicken tenders ahead of time?

Yes! Season the chicken up to a day in advance and refrigerate it until ready to cook. You can also fully cook the tenders, store them in the fridge, and reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore the texture. They’re great for meal prep or weekday lunches.

Can I make this recipe in the oven?

Absolutely. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake the seasoned chicken tenders on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Tongs or Silicone Spatula

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1½ pounds chicken tenders
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Dry Rub

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional garnish: lime wedges and cilantro

Chipotle Lime Sauce

  • ½ cup Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons adobo sauce from canned chipotle peppers
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Pat chicken tenders dry and place them in a large bowl. Add olive oil and toss to coat. In a small bowl, mix all dry rub ingredients, then sprinkle evenly over the chicken. Rub it in well with your hands so it’s fully coated. Let the seasoned chicken rest for 10–15 minutes so the spices can absorb and the rub begins to form a crust.
  • Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Arrange tenders in a single layer, not touching.
  • Air fry for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until chicken is cooked through (165°F) and the rub is dark and crisp at the edges.
  • In a small bowl, stir together yogurt, mayo, adobo sauce, garlic powder, and lime juice. Add salt to taste. Chill until serving.
