Why We Love This Recipe

  • Restaurant Style Flavor: Cajun garlic butter melts into the shells while the crab reheats, giving each bite a buttery seafood boil flavor. Our Shrimp and Crab Gumbo is another favorite.
  • Simple Oven Method: Baking crab legs in a covered dish traps steam so the meat stays tender without complicated cooking techniques.
  • Quick Seafood Dinner: From start to finish the recipe takes about 25 minutes, making it surprisingly doable for a weeknight meal. Just like our Shrimp Scampi Without Wine.
  • Perfect For Entertaining: Crab legs always feel special at the table and this recipe scales easily for gatherings or holiday dinners.

Key Ingredients

Here's some of the main ingredients you'll need to make these baked garlic-butter snow crab legs.

  • Snow Crab Legs: Snow crab legs are naturally sweet and delicate. Most are sold fully cooked and frozen, so the oven simply reheats them while preserving their texture.
  • Unsalted Butter: Butter forms the base of the sauce and helps carry the Cajun seasoning and garlic into the crab shells.
  • Olive Oil: A small amount of olive oil stabilizes the butter and helps prevent it from scorching when heated with the spices.
  • Garlic: Fresh minced garlic brings aroma and depth that pairs beautifully with seafood and lemon.
  • Cajun Seasoning: Cajun seasoning adds warmth and complexity with paprika, herbs, and spices.
  • Old Bay Seasoning: A classic seafood seasoning that reinforces the coastal flavor of the crab.
  • Smoked Paprika: Smoked paprika adds subtle smokiness and deep color to the butter sauce.
  • Onion Powder: Onion powder enhances savory flavor without overpowering the delicate crab meat.
  • Garlic Powder: A second layer of garlic flavor that blends evenly through the butter.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Optional but great for adding a gentle heat that complements the richness of the butter.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon brightens the sauce and balances the richness of the butter.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: A small splash adds savory depth and umami.

A full ingredient list with exact measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Snow Crab Legs: King crab legs can be used instead. They are thicker and may need a few additional minutes in the oven.
  • Cajun Seasoning: Creole seasoning or a simple mix of paprika, garlic powder, and thyme can replace Cajun seasoning.
  • Butter: Use ghee or clarified butter for a cleaner butter flavor and slightly higher heat tolerance.
  • Seafood Boil Style: Add additional Old Bay, red pepper flakes, and extra lemon for a stronger seafood boil flavor.
  • Presentation: Serve the crab legs on a large platter with lemon wedges and parsley so guests can help themselves family-style.

Expert Tips for Success

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณJami's Pro Tips: Want to take this recipe to the next level? Check out my expert tips below for the best flavor, texture, and meal prep hacks!

โœ”๏ธ DO Slit the shells before baking. This allows the butter to reach the crab meat and makes the legs easier to crack.
โœ”๏ธ DO Cover the dish tightly with foil. Steam keeps the crab tender and prevents it from drying out.
โŒ DO NOT Overcook the crab. Snow crab legs are already cooked and only need reheating.

Storage

Store leftover crab legs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in a covered baking dish at 300ยฐF until warmed through. Freezing reheated crab legs is not recommended because the texture becomes tough.

Oven Baked Snow Crab Leg FAQs

What is the best way to cook snow crab legs?

The best way to cook snow crab legs is to gently reheat them using steaming, boiling, or baking. The oven method works well because the crab warms evenly while butter and seasonings infuse the shells.

Is it better to steam or boil snow crabs?

Steaming is generally better than boiling because it keeps the crab meat from becoming waterlogged. However, baking crab legs in the oven can add extra flavor through butter and seasoning.

What seasoning is best for crab legs?

Classic seafood seasonings like Old Bay, Cajun seasoning, garlic butter, and lemon work especially well with crab legs because they enhance the natural sweetness of the meat.

Can you cook frozen snow crab legs in the oven?

Yes, frozen snow crab legs can be baked directly from frozen. Increase the cooking time and keep the dish covered with foil.

Notes

Cooking Notes
Snow crab legs are already cooked, so the goal is simply to reheat them without drying out the meat. Baking them covered with foil traps steam and keeps them tender while the butter sauce infuses flavor.
Tips for Best Results
  • Slit the shells before baking so the garlic butter can reach the crab meat.
  • Cover the baking dish tightly with foil to trap steam.
  • Check the crab at 12 minutes to avoid overcooking.
  • Spoon the butter from the pan back over the crab before serving.
How to Know Itโ€™s Ready
The crab legs are ready when they are steaming hot and fragrant. The meat should easily pull away from the shell and appear opaque and juicy.
