Simple Romaine Salad Ingredients

  • Romaine Lettuce: Crisp and refreshing, romaine serves as the perfect base, adding a satisfying crunch to every bite.
  • Baby Heirloom Tomatoes: These colorful, sweet tomatoes add a pop of color and juicy flavor, creating a beautiful contrast with the other ingredients.
  • Red Onion: Thinly sliced, it provides a subtle sharpness that balances the salad’s flavors. For a milder taste, soak the slices in balsamic vinegar before adding.
  • Croutons: Crunchy and seasoned, they add texture and a savory note that complements the fresh vegetables.
  • Feta Cheese: Tangy and creamy, feta crumbles bring richness to the salad, balancing the sweetness of the tomatoes.
  • Cucumber: Cool and crisp, cucumber slices add a refreshing quality to the mix.
  • Basil: Fresh and fragrant, basil adds an herbal note that enhances the overall flavor of the salad.
  • Balsamic Vinegar: A tangy, slightly sweet vinegar that adds depth and balances the flavors.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Smooth and rich, it brings a silky texture and blends beautifully with the balsamic for a simple yet flavorful dressing.

How to Make Simple Romaine Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes and Feta

STEP ONE: Prepare the Salad Base

In a large salad bowl, combine romaine, baby heirloom tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, and basil. Toss gently.

STEP TWO: Add Croutons and Feta

Sprinkle the croutons and crumbled feta cheese over the salad. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

STEP THREE: Make the Dressing

In a small bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

STEP FOUR: Dress the Salad

Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss to coat. Serve immediately.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use regular tomatoes instead of heirloom?

Yes, cherry or grape tomatoes work well if heirloom tomatoes aren’t available. Just halve them for similar size and flavor.

What can I add to make this salad a main dish?

Adding grilled chicken, chickpeas, or quinoa makes it hearty enough for a main course.

Is it okay to make this salad ahead of time?

To maintain freshness, store the dressing separately and add croutons just before serving.
