Gorgeous heirloom tomatoes, creamy burrata cheese, and fresh basil are the three primary ingredients in this beautiful Burrata Caprese Salad that can be served as an appetizer or stand-alone. Add some sweet balsamic glaze and your guests will be ready to dive in!

Burrata, meaning "buttery" in Italian, is a cow-milk cheese made from burrata and cream that resembles a ball. When sliced open, the creamy inside spills out and can be spread on toast or served as an appetizer with fresh tomatoes or prosciutto.

    Why we love this recipe:

    • It's gorgeous - I just love the color of these tomatoes when sliced. They turn an ordinary Caprese Salad into an extraordinary one!
    • It's tasty - Caprese (in any form) is one of our all-time favorite dishes. Search Caprese on our website and you will see what we mean.
    • It's easy - A few slices of tomato, some layering of ingredients, and you have a gorgeous salad ready to eat in under five minutes.

Note: Refer to the recipe card below for exact quantities.

    Instructions

How to Make Burrata Caprese Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes

    STEP ONE: Slice the Tomatoes

Wash the heirloom tomatoes well, then cut them into nice, even slices.

    STEP TWO: Layer the Ingredients

Begin layering the ingredients as follows: One tomato slice, followed by a heaping spoon of burrata cheese, then fresh basil. The burrata will have to be sliced open so it can be easily spread. Repeat layers as needed.

STEP THREE: Add Dressing and Serve

Add salt and pepper, then drizzle the balsamic glaze all over the top. Serve immediately.

    Substitutions

    • Cheese - Buffalo mozzarella makes a good replacement for burrata.
    • Tomatoes - A good quality garden tomato would work well if you can't find heirloom tomatoes.

    Variations

    • Occasion - Feeling festive? If it's Christmas time, make a Candy Cane Caprese for the holiday!

    FAQ

Is balsamic glaze the same as balsamic reduction?

Yes, and it is easy to make yourself! Heat some balsamic vinegar up on the stove at low to medium heat until it reduces by half.

    Should tomatoes be refrigerated?

Refrigerating tomatoes will extend their shelf life, but could also decrease their flavor or change their texture. If you don't want your tomatoes to go bad, wait until they are fully ripe, refrigerate for a few days, then bring them back to room temperature before slicing.

What is the difference between an heirloom tomato and a standard garden variety tomato?

Heirloom tomatoes are sweet with more flavor and they have many unique color variations. They tend to have a shorter shelf life and are less disease resistant than hybrid tomatoes.
